Did Brittany Murphy Die of Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Authorities are no closer today to knowing what caused the death of 32 year old actress Brittany Murphy this past Sunday. The coroner's autopsy revealed the actress died of natural causes, effectively ruling out homicide, but the cause of death is still undetermined pending further testing.

So, pending the completion of additional testing, including toxicology, histopathology (study of her organs) and neuropathology (study of her brain) in the next 4 to 6 weeks, the only thing we do know is that a young, seemingly healthy 32 year old died of a cardiac arrest. Speculation of drug abuse and eating disorders are the most common presumptions, but is it possible that Brittany Murphy died from complications of her type 2 diabetes?

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of Diabetes. It occurs when there is too little insulin in the body, blood sugar levels rise, the body begins to break down it's own fat for energy, resulting in a toxic level of acids called ketones. While it's more common among type I diabetics, type II diabetics also go into DKA.

Symptoms of DKA are astonishingly similar to the flu-like illness Brittany Murphy is reported to have been dealing with in the week leading up to her death. According to the Mayo Clinic, DKA symptoms include:

Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal pain
Shortness of breath
Weakness and fatigue
Loss of appetite
Confusion

Symptoms are often confused as the flu, and without proper treatment the diabetic may not realize they are in DKA. Often times the nausea and vomiting result in the diabetic abruptly stopping their medication, causing a critical situation that can ultimately lead to loss of consciousness and death.

How is it possible Brittany Murphy went into DKA? Here's what we know. She was a type 2 diabetic. Recently she had been reported as appearing to have lost some weight, not uncommon among diabetics in DKA. Their body is essentially eating itself away. She complained of shortness of breath, stomach pain, and nausea. Reports are the morning of her death, she was vomiting consistently. According to TMZ, Brittany Murphy also had a prescription for antibiotics on her nightstand. Typically DKA is brought on by an underlying illness, commonly a urinary tract or other bacterial infection. If she did go into DKA, with the proper inpatient treatment there would have only been a 5% chance of mortality.

So is it possible that Brittany Murphy was not anorexic and did not overdose, but rather succumbed to Diabetic Ketoacidosis, an unfortunate complication of her diabetes? It is possible, but we won't know the answer to that question for another 4 to 6 weeks. Until then all we will know is that Hollywood has lost another bright star in the prime of her career.

Suspicion Mounts Over Actress Brittany Murphy's Sudden Death

Moments after movie star Brittany Murphy was found unconscious in the shower by her mother and reported dead from a cardiac arrest at just 32, suspicion and speculation were already mounting over the cause of Murphy’s death.

TMZ reports that Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack, is opposed to the completion of Murphy’s autopsy by Cedar Sinai Medical Center’s staff. However, the LA County Coroner is proceeding with a full investigation into Murphy’s death.

Several prescriptions drugs were found at the scene, but details have yet to be released. Rumors of possible drug use or an eating disorder have been around since Murphy's recent sudden weight loss, nothing had ever been substantiated. According to her mother, Murphy was also reportedly diabetic, so her cardiac arrest and sudden death may have been caused by any of the reported factors.

As part of the coroner’s autopsy, a full toxicology diagnostic will be performed on Murphy and results will likely be available within 6 weeks, according to sources who spoke to TMZ.

Brittany Murphy will be remembered as one of those few actresses that always brought something quirky, yet personal and sincere to her roles. She lit up the screen with her brilliant smile. RIP Brittany Murphy: You will be missed.
